On April 11, 2013, the European Institute in partnership with the Embassy of Ireland and the European Commission organized a seminar focused on the opportunities in health research in Europe. The plenary session of this day-long event featured His Excellency Michael Collins, Ambassador of Ireland to the United States and His Excellency João Vale de Almeida, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States. Both Ambassadors stressed the importance of research, especially in Europe, and also touched upon opportunities for transatlantic scientific cooperation. Joelle Attinger, President of the European Institute, offered the welcoming remarks and James Gavigan, Head of the Science & Technology Section at the Delegation of the European Union to the United States moderated the event.

On March 18, 2013, The European Institute, in cooperation with the Embassy of Ireland, Marine Institute Ireland, and the Delegation of the European Union, organized an event featuring Dr. Peter Heffernan, CEO of Marine Institute Ireland. Dr. John Delaney, Professor of Oceanography at the University of Washington, moderated the discussion and Cathy O’Connor, First Secretary at the Embassy of Ireland, offered opening remarks. Dr. Heffernan argued that the Atlantic Ocean is a largely untapped resource and a potential source of great economic growth for the U.S. and the EU, especially in times of financial distress. He also stressed the importance of close collaboration between Europe and the United States and that their shared interests can be a good starting point for deeper transatlantic maritime cooperation and increasing “blue growth.”

On February 13, 2013, The European Institute hosted a discussion with Robert-Jan Smits, Director General of DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission, on the EU’s new strategic approach to international research and innovation cooperation. With U.S. President Barack Obama’s announcement of the launch of talks for a comprehensive Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, Mr. Smits said that both sides of the Atlantic were “rediscovering each other”, and that the common understanding of the potency of innovation as a prime motor for sustainable economic growth, job creation and global competitiveness augured well for increased European-American cooperation. Anna McDermott-Vitak, Executive Director of Global Government Affairs at Amgen, Inc, offered opening remarks, and Dr. Elias Carayannis, Professor of Science, Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at George Washington University, moderated the lively exchange.

On June 19th, The European Institute, in partnership with Sanofi, convened a meeting of the Transatlantic Roundtable on Innovation and Research in Boston, Massachusetts. Held on the margins of the BIO 2012 Convention, the meeting focused on the challenges facing the sustainability of biomedical research at a time of potent scientific promise and increasingly limited financial resources. Christopher Viehbacher, Chief Executive Officer at Sanofi, opened and moderated the discussion with Dr. Elias Zerhouni, President of Global Research and Development at Sanofi; Dr. Arnd Hoeveler, Head of Unit for Advanced Therapies and Systems Medicine for DG Research and Innovation at the European Commission; Dr. Vicki Seyfert-Margolis, Senior Advisor for Science and Innovation in the Office of the Chief Scientist at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration; and Robert Wells, Head of the Biotechnology Unit in the Directorate for Science and Technology at the OECD.

On January 18, 2012, The European Institute welcomed back Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, European Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation. With characteristic candor and clarity, Commissioner Geoghegan-Quinn presented the European Commission’s bold, new Horizon 2020 proposal, that is focused on improving Europe’s science base and research infrastructure, strengthening Europe’s leadership in key industrial technologies, and facilitating research and innovation that address societal challenges. Horizon 2020 carries an €80 billion budget for 2014-2020, renews emphasis on pooling and sharing across member states, and proposes major simplification and harmonization to ensure effective implementation of its policy objectives. Dr. Alan Leshner, Chief Executive Officer for the American Association for the Advancement of Science introduced the Commissioner and Kathryn Karol, Vice President for International Government Affairs at Amgen Inc. moderated the discussion.
