EU & U.S. Working Together to Enhance Air Travel Safety

On June 16, 2014, The European Institute held a special lunch discussion with Patrick Ky, Executive Director of the European Aviation Safety Agency and Rich Swayze, Assistant Administrator for Policy, International Affairs and Environment at the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration on enhancing air travel safety. Mr. Ky and Mr. Swayze emphasized the need for strong EU-U.S. cooperation in order to maintain strong global aviation safety standards. The discussion was moderated by Neil Planzer, Vice President for Airspace and Air Traffic Management, Digital Aviation at Boeing Commercial Airplanes.

 

Internet Governance and Why It Matters

On June 4, 2014, The European Institute hosted a discussion with Ambassador Daniel Sepulveda, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and U.S. Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy. Ambassador Sepulveda stressed the importance of maintaining a multi-stakeholder model of Internet governance, and the U.S. and Europe’s shared interest in securing a single, interoperable, open and global internet. A View from Eastern Ukraine

On May 8, 2014, The European Institute hosted Dr. Valeriy Konovalyuk, former member of the Ukrainian National Parliament and candidate for President of Ukraine. Dr. Konovalyuk gave a first-hand assessment of events unfolding in Eastern Ukraine, his vision for Ukraine, and addressed the role the United States, Russia, and the European Union can play in securing a peaceful solution and compromise. The discussion was moderated by Matthew Rojansky, Director of the Wilson Center’s Kennan Institute.

 

European Commission Presidential Debate Viewing

On May 15, 2014, The European Institute and the European Parliament Liaison Office with the U.S. Congress hosted a viewing of the second debate between the candidates for European Commission President. A panel discussion between Washington-based European journalists set the stage for the debate. Brian Beary, U.S. Correspondent for Europolitics;Dr. Stefan Grobe, Washington Correspondent for Euronews; and Miodrag Soric, Washington Bureau Chief forDeutsche Welle discussed possible outcomes of the May 25 European elections as well as the implications for Europe’s future and for the transatlantic relationship.

 

Security Challenges for the Euro-Atlantic Community

On April 30, 2014, The European Institute held a breakfast discussion with Lieutenant General Michael Flynn, Director of the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency on the challenges facing the transatlantic security alliance. General Flynn addressed the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, the impact of the Edward Snowden revelations, and stressed the vital importance of stronger cooperation between the United States and Europe in tackling critical global security issues.
