This series serves as a vital source of information for both European and American policymakers, who utilize this platform to introduce and explain policies that have direct bearing on the U.S. and EU governments, the U.S. Congress, the European Parliament, EU member states, business executives and other relevant parties. At this time of uncommon challenges and change, The Institute promotes greater understanding between key public and private sector leaders on issues of common concern and helps develop effective and mutually beneficial solutions. At its best, the Forum serves to diffuse contentious rhetoric on sensitive policy issues and advance the transatlantic dialogue in a constructive direction.

Recent Meetings

On December 21, 2011, The Honorable Erato Kozakou-Marcoullis, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Cyprus presented her perspective on the priorities of the upcoming Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the European Union, and shared her thoughts on Cyprus’ and the EU’s approach to a rapidly evolving  economic and political order in the region.

On December 5th, The European Institute presented its Transatlantic Leadership Award to The Honorable Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund and to The Honorable Elias Zerhouni, President of Global Research and Development at Sanofi and former Director of the U.S. National Institutes of Health, at the Annual Ambassadors’ Gala Dinner. Madame Lagarde was recognized for exercising uncommon leadership in seeking to resolve the European sovereign debt crisis and stem further contagion of the global economy. Dr. Zerhouni was honored for his pivotal role in furthering translational medical innovation to the benefit of global public health.

On October 25, 2011, The European Institute held its Annual Meeting of the Members and Board of Advisors at the Belgian Residence, hosted by His Excellency Jan Matthysen, Ambassador of Belgium to the United States.  Moderated by Nova Daly, Public Policy Consultant at Wiley Rein LLP, the panelists: Kathleen Doherty, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Europe and Eurasia at the U.S. Department of State; Dr. Christian Burgsmüller, Counselor and Head of the Transport, Energy, Environment and Nuclear Matters Section at the Delegation of the European Union; Barbara Matthews, Managing Director at BCM International Regulatory Analytics LLC and The Honorable Bart Gordon, Partner at K&L Gates discussed the transatlantic relationship, energy and environment priorities, the ongoing economic crisis and the need and opportunities for innovation on both sides of the Atlantic.  

The panel was followed by a dinner discussion with David Mark, Senior Editor at POLITICO who shared his insight into the current U.S. political landscape and the upcoming 2012 elections.

On October 17, 2011, Her Excellency Ritva Koukku-Ronde, Finland's new Ambassador to the United States, offered her perspectives on Finland’s evolving role within the European Union, her nation’s approach to resolving the European sovereign debt crisis and the challenges of insuring greater political parity within the EU 27.  She also assessed the current state of Finnish-U.S. relations, emphasizing the need for continued transatlantic cooperation on shared economic, security and environmental challenges.

On September 22, 2011, The Honorable Christian Syse, Deputy Secretary General of the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs addressed Norway’s unique role within the transatlantic alliance, as a founding member of NATO and as an important partner of the European Union. Just shy of EU membership, Norway’s active role is by no means limited to its’ engagement in the European Free Trade Association and the European Economic Area, as witnessed by the nation’s consistent efforts to further greater social and economic cohesion in Central and Eastern Europe.  Mr. Syse also offered insights into the future of Norway’s relationship with the European Union, and the considerable challenges facing both Europe and the United States.
